The Mended Drum

The Mended Drum is located in the Historic Cathedral village of Fortrose on The Black Isle approx 12 miles north of Inverness and the now famous North Coast 500 route around the North of Scotland. We overlook the beach and the Fortrose & Rosemarkie golf club considered to be the 15th oldest golf club in the world. A Short walk along the beach leads you to Chanonry Point with picnic benches and where our well loved dolphins may be seen as well as the commemoration plinth telling of the death, by tarring, of the famous Highland Brahan Seer. Approx. 10 mins in the opposite direction along the beach will take you to the Community Cafe and after a wee snack/drink you can continue on to view the interesting beach rock formations/caves and perhaps be fortunate to discover fossils or yet another archeological Pictish remains!

From this area of the beach you can explore the Village of Rosemarkie and the Groam House Museum, of pictish/celtic interest; Panacea, a delightful little health shop filled with oils, herbs, gifts, an antique shop etc.and the entrancing magic of the nearby Fairy Glen. Travelling by car/bus takes you to the old fishing village of Cromarty with its historic buildings such as Hugh Millar Cottage, Carnegie Library, Cromarty Court house, old church, lighthouse, a really good cheese shop where you can sample before you buy and sit in their garden and rest with a coffee or tea, and a further variety of eating places such as the well known Sutors Creek.

Exploring Fortrose you will find the remains of the Cathedral and its grounds, as well as other churches, the harbour and sailing club and a good variety of eating places, bakers, a small co-op , post office, antique and gift shop. There is a walk which takes you from Fortrose along the old railway track to Avoch yet another village with its delightful little fishing cottages. Buses from Fortrose go to Inverness where you can make connections to other interesting locations such as Skye or Orkney. From Inverness a short trip east leads you to ‘Outlander Land’ to the historic Culloden Battlefield, museum, and Fort George, also a national treasure. Westward from Inverness along the Great Glen Fault you will reach our famous and mysterious Loch Ness with its world renowned, elusive monster, Nessie.

The area is marvellous for outdoor pursuits. Golf, sailing, canoeing, cycling trails, wild swimming, bird watching, hill walking, dolphin trips, exploring etc

So welcome to The Mended Drum and its lovely surroundings.
